Debunking EV Myths

December 12, 2025
In recent years, energy-efficient cars like hybrid and electric vehicles have grown in popularity, but the myths surrounding them continue to spread misinformation. We’ll help debunk some of these EV myths to give you peace of mind when it comes to purchasing and owning a used EV.

Myth One: “EVs are more expensive than gas vehicles.”

While new EVs typically carry a higher sticker price, the same cannot be said for used electric vehicle models. Due to standard depreciation, many used electric vehicles can be considered an economical car comparable to used gas vehicles and may even be cheaper to own in the long run, depending on factors like driving habits, maintenance and energy costs.

For instance, a used EV will still require tire rotations, air filter replacements and fluid checks, but it doesn’t need regular oil changes and spark plugs like a gas vehicle. While your household electric bill may go up due to charging your EV at home, many owners find the total cost of ownership competitive when factoring in reduced maintenance needs.

Myth Two: “You have to install a charger at home.”

While a lot of EV drivers have a charger installed at their home, it isn’t required. Most drivers can plug in their EV into a standard 120-volt household outlet for a Level 1 charge. For a more powerful charge you can install a Level 2 240-volt charger.

A Level 1 or Level 2 EV charger is sufficient for an overnight charge but may take up to 20–40 hours to fully charge based on battery capacity and current charge level. However, most drivers aren’t charging from empty. Like a phone, they plug it in overnight to top it off. For an even faster charge, you can visit a public Level 3 charger.

So, consider your daily drive and work commute. Are you a low-mileage driver who works from home? Or are you a commuting diva that needs to go the extra mile? Your daily use patterns should be taken into consideration when determining a charging strategy.

Myth Three: “There aren’t enough charging stations.”

Just like a gasoline car requires a gas station to fuel up, an EV needs a charger to recharge. While 80% of EV charging happens at home, that still leaves 20% of charging on the go. Since automotive companies have been doubling down on EV production, the number of public chargers has increased to almost 250,000. With multiple EV charger locater apps and websites, you can find EV chargers widely available in many regions, with growing coverage near everyday destinations maybe even near your favorite coffee shop or a national park.

Myth Four: “Used EVs are risky.”

Buying a used gas vehicle can come with risk for repair, outdated software and more. The same can be said for used electric vehicles. There’s no such thing as no risk, but you can lessen the risk by doing a few things. Consider purchasing a certified used EV or a CarBravo certified used electric vehicle that’s been inspected to make sure it’s running in tip-top shape. Once you find a certified used EV that you like, check out the battery’s health, software updates and car history to make sure there isn’t anything of concern, keeping in mind EV batteries are built to last and degrade slower than people might think. Then verify if the EV has warranties, or purchase an extended warranty to help keep your vehicle running smoothly for longer.
Myth Five: “EVs just don’t fit my lifestyle.”

When it comes to owning an EV, the most common concerns are battery life and range anxiety. People may believe they’ll run out of charge every time they drive somewhere. But that’s simply not true. Most EVs typically offer a battery range of 150–400 with a full charge depending on temperature, battery size, amount of charge and driving habits. With the average daily commute being 40 miles, you can add in a grocery run, a coffee stop, a school pickup or even a trip to the zoo and still have battery life to spare.

To make sure an EV fits your lifestyle, start by planning out your daily routes and future road trips (like your annual holiday trip to Grandma’s) based on mileage and charging locations. Finally, consider EV features and benefits. If you like a quiet cabin, regenerative braking, reducing your carbon footprint and never having to fill up the gas tank, then an EV may be right for you.
