Why buying certified matters more than you think

Buying a used car can feel uncertain. You may not know how well it was maintained and its full history. You're wondering if you're getting a fair deal or if you're about to inherit someone else's problems. And that’s exactly why CarBravo certified used vehicles exist.

If you've been shopping used vehicles, you've probably seen the term "certified pre-owned or certified used" pop up. Maybe you've also seen regular "used" listings. You might be wondering what the actual difference is and whether it matters. Then there's the question of where to buy.

Let's walk through all of it. By the end, you'll understand what certified means, why it can matter for your purchase, and exactly how to navigate the buying process.

Certified used vs. used: Understanding the real difference

The difference between a certified used car and a regular used car comes down to one word: verification.

A regular used car is just that—a used car. Someone owned it. They drove it. They're selling it. You don't know much else without digging into history reports and vehicle condition yourself. There's no standardized inspection. No guarantee it's been maintained well. No warranty backing your purchase (unless the seller offers one). You're buying it as-is and that might mean you need to do more research to feel confident in your purchase.

A certified used car is different. It must go through a whole process to officially be up for sale as certified used. First, its history is reviewed. Then it is inspected inside and out to ensure it meets our standards for certification. If it isn’t up to par, we’ll fix it or replace it or it doesn’t get certified. Once its history, inspection and reconditioning get the green light, it's certified meaning it meets our CarBravo requirements and standards.

Is certified used better than regular used? That's not a yes-or-no answer. It depends on your comfort level with risk, your budget and what matters most to you in a purchase. But now you understand what you're actually comparing.

How CarBravo works: The foundation

CarBravo is a GM-backed used vehicle brand. We're not a single dealership. We're a nationwide network of Chevrolet, Buick and GMC dealers who sell quality used vehicles and yes, that includes other brands.

You can browse thousands of vehicles on CarBravo.com. When you find one you're interested in, contact the dealer, schedule a test drive , and review the vehicle's history and inspection details. From there, you work together with the dealer on the purchase terms and finalize everything. And when you drive your vehicle home, you enjoy ongoing CarBravo support that extends well beyond the sale. That includes CarBravo Protection Plan , GAP Coverage , Pre-Paid Maintenance , and Tire and Wheel Protection all available regardless of whether you're driving a Chevrolet, Buick, GMC or another brand.

Understanding what you're buying: Reports and history

Once you've identified a vehicle or a few it's time to dig deeper. Every CarBravo vehicle comes with information to help you understand what you're considering.

CARFAX® Vehicle History Report
: This shows the vehicle's history including accident reports, service records, ownership changes, title status and mileage history. You'll see if the vehicle has a clean title or if there are any red flags. This is foundational information you need before going further.

Inspection Report
: CarBravo's Certified Used Technicians complete a thorough Multi-Point Inspection. For vehicles under 10 model years old with fewer than 100,000 miles, that's a 126-point inspection. For our BravoBudget lineup (10-15 model years, 100,000-150,000 miles), it's a 62-point inspection. The report details what was checked and the results.

Take time to review these reports. Read the CARFAX carefully. Look at the inspection results. If something concerns you, ask questions. If something doesn't add up, that's worth exploring before you go further.

The test drive: What actually matters

Once you've reviewed the reports and you're interested, schedule a test drive.

A test drive isn't just about how the car feels on the road though that matters. It's about confirming what you learned from the reports and inspection. Does the car feel mechanically sound? Are the features working as described? Does it feel like a good fit for how you actually drive?

Here's what to pay attention to during a test drive:

  • How it accelerates and brakes.
  • Whether the infotainment system, climate controls, power windows and other features work as described.
  • Does the seat position feel right for you and can you see well?
Overall, does this car feel like the right choice for your life. A test drive can’t tell you everything, but your instincts matter. If something feels off, don't ignore it. If everything feels right, that's a good sign you're on the right track.

Trade-ins: If you're bringing a vehicle

If you're trading in an existing vehicle, that process happens alongside your purchase. You'll bring your current car to the dealership. They'll appraise it evaluate its condition, mileage and market value. That appraisal amount can be used toward your purchase of a CarBravo vehicle.

The specifics of trade-in value depend on your vehicle's condition, age and market demand. The dealership will walk you through that conversation. Be transparent about your vehicle's condition and history. That helps ensure the appraisal is accurate.

Making your purchase: The final steps

Once you've found the right vehicle, done your research and decided this is the one, it's time to finalize your purchase.

This is where details like financing come into play. If you're financing the purchase, you'll work with the dealership or with your own lender to arrange that. If you're paying cash, that's pretty straightforward. Either way, you'll review the purchase agreement, finalize any add-on protection plans and get everything in writing.

Take your time with this step. Read through the paperwork. Ask questions if anything isn't clear. This is a significant purchase make sure you understand what you're signing and what you're committing to.

Warranties and protection: What you're getting

Every CarBravo certified vehicle comes with warranty coverage. The specifics depend on the vehicle's age and mileage.

For vehicles under 10 model years old with fewer than 100,000 miles, you get Standard Bumper-to-Bumper Limited Warranty for 12 months or 12,000 miles (whichever comes first). This covers major components if something goes wrong.
