Timing is everything
Shopping for the best deal on a used vehicle can be daunting, but shopping during a certain time—at the end of the month or during a sales event—can make it a little easier. Plus, if you’re willing to expand your search radius, you might be able to find an even better deal on the car of your dreams.
Other informational car websites can even help you research the market and types of vehicles before you purchase.

Ways to get the best deal
To get the best deal, there are a few steps you should follow before visiting a dealership:
- Your dealer is going to be super knowledgeable about their vehicles, the market and pricing. They also know their inventory and what they need to move, so you’ll need to do your own research to find out if you’re getting a deal. Sometimes working with the sales manager can help, as they get the final say on a price.
- You need to know your vehicle budget and what you can afford in a monthly payment. But stay focused on the overall vehicle pricing, as dealers may try to get you to spend your max monthly payment amount for a longer term on a more expensive vehicle.
- Look at the pricing of the vehicles you’re interested in. Vehicle pricing can change based on different features and models, model year and more. It’s also good to identify your must-have features before you go to the dealership.
- If you do have to finance your vehicle, know your credit score. The better the score, the better the potential interest rate. Check with financial establishments besides the dealership to see what interest rates they’ll offer based on your score. Dealerships can help you find financing for your vehicle, but they don’t always have the best rates. However, they may be able to match a rate and sometimes have access to special rates or incentives.
- Visit more than one dealership and get quotes on vehicles you like. Give them the same parameters so you’ll be able to see who has the better total offer. Plus, look at their extra add-ons, extended warranties, special sales and more. One dealership may give you better vibes, but another may offer a lower price or a better selection.
- Be willing to negotiate. Don’t assume the price you’re given is it. Ask dealers about discounts, add-ons, financing and more. You can do this via email, phone or in-person.
While used car shopping can be daunting, if you follow these steps, you should feel confident in your deal and purchase.
