Which used EV is right for you?

May 5, 2026

Summary

  • There are three basic types of EVs and each one may fit a different kind of driver.
  • Your parking setup and charging access may impact your decision.
  • Evaluating your driving routine and habits can point you toward the right used EV.
  • Features like towing, seating and storage can guide your choice.
  • Which type of used EV fits your lifestyle?

Choose your used EV

No two electric vehicle (EV) drivers are alike. Some drive the same 10 miles every day. Some spend half their week on the highway. And some haven’t been to a gas station in quite a while.

When exploring the right fuel-efficient used car for you, start by evaluating your driving habits, and then consider these three EV types:
  • BEV (battery electric vehicle)
  • PHEV (electric + gas backup, requires plugging in)
  • HEV (gas-powered hybrid, does not plug in)

Where do you park, and can you charge?

Your charging situation may be the biggest factor when it comes to finding your perfect EV match. Things to consider:
  • Do you have a garage or dedicated driveway? Or do you rely on street parking or shared garage access?
  • Can you install a Level 2 charger if needed?
  • Does your workplace offer chargers?
  • Are you in a rental or HOA with charger restrictions?
If you own a home or have a garage and you’re able to install a Level 2 a full battery electric vehicle (BEV) may be a good option for many drivers. Overnight home charging can be convenient depending on the vehicle and setup.

If you park on the street but you can charge at work, a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) can offer added flexibility and the option to use gas when charging isn’t available.

If you live in a rental and can’t install a charger, a hybrid (HEV) offers fuel-efficient driving without the need for plug-in charging.

What’s your drive like?

Think about how you use your car week to week. Whether you’re driving to work during rush hour or taking road trips, your driving routine can help identify what EV type will work best for you.
  • How many miles do you drive a week?
  • Is your commute consistent, or does it vary?
  • How often do you take road trips?
  • Do you drive in extreme cold or heat?
  • Are you comfortable planning charging stops?
  • Would occasional public charging feel inconvenient?
  • Are you driving more city roads or highways?

Do you need any special features in an EV?

Just like gas vehicles, EVs vary widely in features, size and capabilities.

Think about:
  • Do you need towing capabilities?
  • Do you need lots of cargo space?
  • Are you hauling the whole family for a vacation or carpooling to school?
  • Are you driving mostly rural roads or highways?
If you’re regularly hauling kids, sporting gear and groceries, an EV SUV or minivan will make your life easier.

If you like to go camping with your RV or take the boat out on the weekends, then depending on the model, a hybrid or EV truck may do the trick with their strength and capability.

If you live in a rural area with limited charging options, a hybrid car could offer you more flexibility on the road compared to a fully electric vehicle.

The EV lifestyle assessment

Now that you’ve gone over your three EV options hybrid, plug-in hybrid and full electric ask yourself these final questions:
  • Do I have reliable home charging?
  • Is my weekly driving consistent?
  • Do I take road trips more than once a month?
  • Do I prefer minimal lifestyle changes?
If your answers are mostly “yes,” a full EV may be the choice for you. If your answers are mostly “no,” then hybrid or plug-in hybrid is likely your best bet.
